How to Build Your First n8n Workflow: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Posted in Tutorials

Reading about automation is nice. Building your first workflow is better. In this tutorial you’ll build a simple but genuinely useful workflow: every morning, n8n fetches the latest tech headlines and sends them to you on Telegram. It takes about 15 minutes.

STEP 1 — CREATE THE WORKFLOW

Open n8n, click to create a new workflow, and give it a clear name like ‘Morning Tech Headlines’.

STEP 2 — ADD A SCHEDULE TRIGGER

Add a Schedule Trigger node and set it to run once a day at 7:00 AM. This node starts the workflow automatically — no manual runs needed.

STEP 3 — FETCH THE HEADLINES

Add an RSS Read node after the trigger and point it at a tech news feed. This node pulls the latest headlines each time the workflow runs.

STEP 4 — FORMAT THE MESSAGE

Add a Code or Set node to shape the data into a short, readable message — a bold title plus the top 5 headlines with links. Keep it short: nobody reads a wall of text at 7 AM.

STEP 5 — SEND IT TO TELEGRAM

Add a Telegram node, connect your Telegram credentials (via BotFather), and send the formatted message to your own chat.

STEP 6 — TEST, THEN ACTIVATE

Click ‘Execute Workflow’ and watch each node run. Check your Telegram — the digest should arrive. Fix anything that looks wrong, then flip the workflow to Active. Congratulations: a robot now briefs you every morning.

TIPS FOR YOUR NEXT WORKFLOWS

Test one node at a time before running everything. Use Sticky Notes on the canvas to document tricky logic — future you will be grateful. And start small: one working workflow beats five half-built ones.
